Decimal expansions · 2 marks

It repeats: The division never reaches a remainder of 0, but the sequence of digits begins to loop infinitely. 511 = 0.454545 … = 0.45.

Answer: 5 ÷ 11 gives remainders 6, 5, 6, 5, … and digits 4, 5, 4, 5, …, so 511 = 0.454545… = 0.45, a non-terminating repeating decimal with repeating block 45.

Step-by-step solution

Idea: Do the long division and watch the remainders. As soon as a remainder comes back, the digits from that point repeat for ever. The bar is written over the block that repeats.

  1. 50 ÷ 11 = 4 remainder 6; 60 ÷ 11 = 5 remainder 5; 50 ÷ 11 = 4 remainder 6 again.1 mark
  2. The remainder 5 has come back (we again divide 50), so the digits 4, 5 repeat for ever: 511 = 0.4545… = 0.45. The remainder is never 0, so the decimal does not terminate.1 mark
5/11 = 0.454545… = 0.45 (non-terminating, repeating block 45).

Check: 0.45 = 4599 = 511 ✓.

Answer to write in the exam

50 ÷ 11 = 4 r 6; 60 ÷ 11 = 5 r 5; 50 ÷ 11 = 4 r 6, …

Remainders repeat ⇒ digits 45 repeat

∴ 511 = 0.454545… = 0.45

Common mistakes that cost marks

  • Putting the bar over only the 5 (0.45 = 0.4555…). Both digits 4 and 5 repeat.
  • Writing 0.45 and stopping. That is a terminating decimal and is not equal to 511.
  • Bringing down a 0 and forgetting to write a digit in the quotient when the divisor does not go in.

MCQ (1 mark)

The decimal expansion of 711 is

  1. 0.63
  2. 0.63
  3. 0.63
  4. 0.7
Show answer

(B) 0.63
70 ÷ 11 = 6 r 4; 40 ÷ 11 = 3 r 7; then 70 again, so 0.636363… = 0.63.

Short answer (2 marks)

Find the decimal expansion of 833 by long division and state the repeating block.

Show answer80 ÷ 33 = 2 r 14; 140 ÷ 33 = 4 r 8; then 80 again (1 mark). 833 = 0.242424… = 0.24, repeating block 24 (1 mark).
