Decimal expansions · 3 marks

The decimal expansion of pq will be terminating precisely when the prime factors of q are only 2, only 5 or both 2 and 5. Can you explain why?

Answer: If q = 2m × 5n, multiplying top and bottom by enough 2s or 5s makes the denominator a power of 10, so the decimal terminates. Conversely, a terminating decimal is N10k, and in lowest terms its denominator divides 10k = 2k5k, so it has no prime factors other than 2 and 5.

Step-by-step solution

Idea: A terminating decimal is exactly a fraction with a power of 10 as denominator, and 10 = 2 × 5. Here pq is in lowest terms.

  1. If q has only 2s and 5s: say q = 2m × 5n. Multiply top and bottom by the missing factors (5s if m > n, 2s if n > m) so both powers equal the larger one, k. The denominator becomes 2k5k = 10k.1 mark
  2. A fraction over 10k is a decimal with k decimal places, e.g. 320 = 322 × 5 = 3 × 522 × 52 = 15100 = 0.15. So it terminates.1 mark
  3. If the decimal terminates: with k decimal places it equals N10k. Reducing to lowest terms only removes factors, so q divides 10k = 2k5k and can contain no prime other than 2 and 5. Any other prime (3, 7, 11, …) in q therefore makes the decimal non-terminating.1 mark
Only 2s and 5s in q let us scale the denominator up to a power of 10, which gives a terminating decimal; and a terminating decimal is N/10^k, whose lowest-terms denominator can only contain the primes 2 and 5.

Answer to write in the exam

Let q = 2m × 5n, k = larger of m, n

pq = p × 2k−m × 5k−n10k ⇒ terminates after k places

e.g. 320 = 3 × 522 × 52 = 15100 = 0.15

Conversely, terminating ⇒ pq = N10k ⇒ q divides 2k5k

∴ Terminating exactly when the prime factors of q are only 2 and/or 5.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  • Forgetting that pq must be in lowest terms: 615 = 25 = 0.4 terminates although 15 = 3 × 5.
  • Explaining only one direction (2s and 5s ⇒ terminating) and not why other primes stop it terminating.
  • Multiplying only the denominator by 5s and not the numerator, which changes the value.

How this can come in the exam

MCQ (1 mark)

Which denominator, in lowest terms, gives a terminating decimal?

  1. 12
  2. 35
  3. 64
  4. 90
Show answer

(C) 64
64 = 26; 12 and 90 contain 3, 35 contains 7.

Assertion–Reason (1 mark)

Assertion (A): 2130 has a terminating decimal expansion.
Reason (R): 30 has the prime factor 3.

  1. Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
  2. Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
  3. A is true but R is false.
  4. A is false but R is true.
Show answer

(B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
2130 = 710 = 0.7, so A is true. R is true but does not explain A (the factor 3 cancels); the reason is that the lowest-terms denominator 10 = 2 × 5.

Try one yourself

Write 7125 as a decimal by making the denominator a power of 10.

Show answer

125 = 53; 7 × 81000 = 561000 = 0.056.
