The wickets taken by a bowler in International Cricket matches till 2025 are shown in the table. Complete the given stacked bar charts (the bar lengths can be approximate),
- (i) comparing the total wickets taken at home vs. overseas:
- (ii) The total wickets taken in each format:
Step-by-step solution
| Test | ODI | T20 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home | 62 | 100 | 32 |
| Overseas | 172 | 49 | 71 |
Idea: Each bar is built by joining its pieces end to end. Work out where each piece starts and ends: start of a piece = end of the previous piece.
(i) comparing the total wickets taken at home vs. overseas:
- Home bar: Test from 0 to 62, ODI from 62 to 62 + 100 = 162, T20 from 162 to 162 + 32 = 194.1 mark
- Overseas bar: Test from 0 to 172, ODI from 172 to 221, T20 from 221 to 292. Totals: home 194, overseas 292, so more wickets were taken overseas.1 mark
(ii) The total wickets taken in each format:
- Test bar: Home 0 to 62, Overseas 62 to 234. ODI bar: Home 0 to 100, Overseas 100 to 149.1 mark
- T20 bar: Home 0 to 32, Overseas 32 to 103. Totals: Test 234, ODI 149, T20 103; most wickets in Tests.1 mark
Check: Both charts must show the same grand total: 194 + 292 = 486 and 234 + 149 + 103 = 486 ✓.
Answer to write in the exam
(i)
Home: Test 0–62, ODI 62–162, T20 162–194 (total 194)
Overseas: Test 0–172, ODI 172–221, T20 221–292 (total 292)
∴ Bars drawn as shown; more wickets overseas
(ii)
Test: Home 0–62, Overseas 62–234 (total 234)
ODI: Home 0–100, Overseas 100–149 (total 149)
T20: Home 0–32, Overseas 32–103 (total 103)
∴ Bars drawn as shown
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Starting every piece at 0 (drawing a cluster chart) instead of joining the pieces end to end.
- Marking the ODI piece as ending at 100 instead of at 62 + 100 = 162.
- Mixing up rows and columns: chart (i) needs one bar per row (home, overseas), chart (ii) one bar per column (formats).
