Quick answer
In Bahrain, IGCSE exams are set by two UK boards, Cambridge International (Cambridge IGCSE) and Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE). Most students sit them in Grade 10 at their school. Cambridge holds two exam sessions a year in Bahrain, May/June and October/November. Students who are not entered by a school can register as private candidates through the British Council in Bahrain.
What is the IGCSE?
The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two-year course for students aged about 14 to 16, usually taken in Grades 9 and 10 (Years 10 and 11 in British-curriculum schools), with the exams at the end of Grade 10. Cambridge describes its IGCSE as the world’s most popular international qualification for this age group, with more than 70 subjects. Universities and employers worldwide accept it, and good IGCSE grades lead on to AS and A Levels or other post-16 courses.
In Bahrain, many British-curriculum and international schools prepare students for the IGCSE alongside their own school courses. Students choose a set of subjects, commonly English, Mathematics, the sciences and several options.
Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE?
Two boards set most IGCSE exams taken in Bahrain. Your child’s school decides which board, and sometimes it differs by subject, so check the board and syllabus code on the timetable.
| Cambridge IGCSE | Pearson Edexcel International GCSE | |
|---|---|---|
| Exam board | Cambridge International (Cambridge University Press & Assessment) | Pearson Edexcel |
| Grades | A* to G for most subjects; some subjects are graded 9 to 1 | 9 (highest) to 1 |
| Paper levels | Core and Extended in many subjects | Foundation and Higher in some subjects, such as Maths |
| Exam sessions | May/June and October/November | Mainly May/June, with January for some subjects |
Both are accepted in the same way by universities. What matters for preparation is the exact syllabus your child is entered for, because topics, paper formats and practical assessments differ between boards and subjects.
When are IGCSE exams held in Bahrain?
Cambridge IGCSE exams in Bahrain run in two sessions each year: May/June, which most school students sit, and October/November, which is often used for resits and by private candidates. Cambridge also has a March session, but it is only available in India. Pearson Edexcel’s main session is also May/June.
Exact dates are set by each board for each subject and published in its timetable. Schools register their students for the exams, and the British Council in Bahrain gives private candidates their exam dates and venue.
Registration closes months before the exams: for the May/June session the deadline usually falls early in the year, and for October/November in the summer. Check the current deadline with your school or the British Council before planning.
How are IGCSE exams graded?
- Cambridge IGCSE uses grades A* (highest) to G for most subjects. Some subjects are graded 9 (highest) to 1. Below the lowest grade, a result is recorded as U (ungraded).
- Pearson Edexcel International GCSE uses 9 (highest) to 1, where 9 is above the old A*.
- Core and Extended (Cambridge): in many subjects students take either Core papers or Extended papers. Core is easier but caps the grade at C; Extended is needed for A and A*. Teachers usually decide the entry level in Grade 10, so a strong Grade 9 year matters.
- Foundation and Higher (Edexcel): similar to Core and Extended. The Higher tier is needed for the top grades.
How do private candidates register for IGCSE in Bahrain?
Students who are home-schooled, resitting a subject outside school, or whose school does not offer a subject can sit IGCSE exams as private candidates. In Bahrain, the British Council handles registration for private candidates for both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams. Its process has four steps: complete the registration form, pay the exam fees, submit the form, and receive confirmation.
- Have the student’s CPR or passport details ready.
- Know the exact board, subject and syllabus code, and the paper level (Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher).
- Some science syllabuses include practical exams or a practical alternative paper, so ask which option is available for private candidates.
- Register before the deadline for the session; late entries cost more or may not be accepted.
How to prepare for IGCSE exams
- Start from the syllabus. Download the official syllabus for each subject and tick off topics as they are covered.
- Practise past papers under time. IGCSE questions follow a recognisable style, and timed practice is the fastest way to improve.
- Use the mark schemes. They show the exact words and steps that earn marks, especially in the sciences.
- Aim for Extended or Higher. Build the Grade 9 foundations early so your child can sit the papers that allow the top grades.
- Get help early with Maths and the sciences. Gaps in algebra or chemistry calculations grow quickly in Grade 10.
